Faster, more efficient, less injury-prone … these are Coach Dominic Latella's goals for the swimmers at SwimBox, his sports performance center in Fairfax, Virginia. Using SwimBox's Endless Pools® Performance pool, he's now sharing his knowledge in a video series of 25 swim drills.
With more than 15 years of experience, Coach Latella is the only Level-4 U.S. Masters Swimming coach in Virginia and D.C. (That's the highest certification level available.) At SwimBox, his to-the-point scientific approach helps clients to improve their swimming technique.
“I chose to go with Endless Pools because of the reputation of quality, the speed of the current, and the customer service,” Latella reports. Once his Performance pool was installed, he discovered some unexpected advantages from the more intimate experience of a compact pool.
“It completely changed my mindset of how to coach and how to teach," he reports. "I can see every little detail and [realized] how little I could see before when people were constantly moving away from me.
"After one lesson, they’re more effective. I usually see a huge leap in ability after three lessons.”
Coach Latella used his Endless Pools installation to shoot 25 short swim drills, including these three:
1. Windmill Drill
This Windmill Drill helps freestyle swimmers to focus on body rotation and core engagement.
The complete playlist features three progressions of this drill to help develop your balance in the water.
2. Corkscrew Drill
Though demonstrated in the Endless Pools environment, these drills have applications in traditional pools and in open water. This maneuver, for instance, helps develop skills needed to pass another swimmer or to skirt around a water buoy in a race.
The complete playlist includes another freestyle/backstroke combination that's designed to advance your coordination and stability.
3. Zipper Drill
In addition to this classic drill, the complete playlist includes two variations called Fingertip Drag Drills. All versions are designed to promote a strong recovery phase in your freestyle stroke.
Our thanks to Lissa and Dominic Latella of SwimBox for these incredibly helpful videos. You can visit the SwimBox website for more information or to book an appointment at their Fairfax, Virginia, location.
